A strawberry banana smoothie can be made a dozen different ways, but a few small choices separate a mediocre one from a genuinely great one.

First, this recipe uses frozen strawberries rather than fresh ones. Frozen fruit chills and thickens the smoothie from the inside out, so you don’t need to dilute the flavor with a pile of ice cubes. Tips for the Best Possible Texture

A few small habits make a noticeable difference in how this smoothie turns out.

Use a properly ripe banana. A banana with a few brown spots is sweeter and blends more smoothly than an underripe, starchy one. If your banana isn’t quite ripe enough, this is one place where a slightly overripe banana is actually a good thing.

Freeze your banana ahead of time for extra thickness. If you like your smoothies extra thick and milkshake-like, peel a ripe banana, break it into chunks, and freeze it in advance. You can then skip the ice altogether, which keeps the smoothie from getting watered down and instead makes it richer and creamier.

Don’t skip the yogurt. It’s tempting to think of yogurt as optional, but it’s genuinely doing a lot of work here — both for texture and for making this smoothie filling enough to double as breakfast rather than just a sweet drink.
